Greek Terms

Active: A man who has been initiated into lifelong fraternity membership.

Alumnus: pl. Alumni; fem. Alumnae A fraternity member who has graduated from college.

Badge/Pin: The badge/pin is worn on the chest designating an initiated member. A new member, associate or pledge pin is simpler and used to designate a new member.

Brother: A term used by fraternity members to refer to other members of their fraternity.

Bid: A formal invitation to a potential new member to join a fraternity.

Chapter: The local group of a national/international fraternity.

Fraternity: The name that applies to all Greek Letter organizations that are characterized by a ritual, pin and a strong tie of friendship. Informally, women's fraternities are called sororities.

Fraternity Row: Refers to the streets Maple and Welch, on which the majority of Fraternity house's are located.

Greek Life Center: Also known as the Greek Life Office, this building serves as the Headquarters for Greek Life at UNT.

House: Term used to refer to the meeting place, and living quarters of a chapter. Ex. The Sigma Nu House or The Delta Sig House

Initiation: A formal ceremony through which new members become full and active members of a fraternity.

Inter-Fraternity Council: The governing body of all the fraternities at UNT.

Multicultural Greek Council (MGC): The governing body of the traditionally Latino/Latina fraternities and sororities.

Legacy: A man who's father, brother or grandfather is an active member or alumnus of a fraternity. Although chapters are not obligated to pledge legacies, special attention is generally given to them during recruitment.

Mixer: A theme party between a sorority and fraternity.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC): The governing body of the historically African - American fraternities and sororities.

New Member/Pledge: A man who has accepted a fraternities bid for fraternity membership but has not been initiated.

Panhellenic Council: The governing body of the National Panhellenic Council (NPC) Sororities at UNT.

Philanthropy: A charitable fund-raiser or service project sponsored by a sorority or fraternity.

Potential New Member (PNM): A man who is participating in recruitment. Also known as a Rushee

Recruitment/Rush: A series of events governed by IFC through which PNM's are introduced to the different fraternities on campus. During this time Fraternities will pick and choose the men they wish to extend bids.

Recruitment Counselor: A fraternity member who leads a Recruitment group through the stages of Recruitment.
